Bo-Kay Fishing Charters

This is a Fish "O" steelhead!

This was my best day; 48 fish, five over 10 lbs., one 13 lb., 32-3/4-inches!

Hi: Guys & Gals

This is to let you know that we are starting a new season of fishing on Lake Erie. There are some changes that you might want to know about.

First: The bow thruster that was installed on Bo-Kay last year works great. As many of you saw last year it has made docking, even with a south east wind really easy. I hope the fishing will be that easy this year.

Second: The 8 ft trolling rods have made a big difference in handling fish and being able to tell when the small ones were on the lines.

Third: There has been a set of new rod holders installed on the gunnels. There are 8 on a side now and that means we will be fishing with 16 rods. That will give us the option to either put out more board rods or more Dipsy which ever works best.

Fourth: I would like to remind you of the Best times to come. The walleyes start moving in to the area around mid May. These are the big hens; they have just finished spawning and are tired and hungry. That is the problem; they feed mainly at night and rest all day on the bottom. They can be taken, but it's hard and you won't get many. We are forced to drag the bottom and they won't hit unless the presentation is right in front of their nose. They won't chase anything. If you want a few big fish, this is the time to come.

The males and small females start to arrive in mid June and they normally get here in big numbers then. At the same time the Steelhead come in too. This is what I mean when I tell every one that the Best time is the two weeks either side of the fourth of July. The steelhead stay until the water warms to about 65 deg. and that usually happens about two weeks after the fourth of July. The walleyes stay and even get better until about the first of August; I have had some of the best catches at that time. From then on they start to get a little gun shy thus harder to catch, but they are still here. The sand bar holds bait all season long and that is where we fish, some times west and some times east, I have been known to even go north and south.

The pictures above were taken on just such a day, this catch weighed 185 lbs., for 48 fish. There were five fish over 10 lbs., and one that went 13 lbs., and was only ¼-inch short of the state record (they ate it). The state record was caught in Dec. and was full of eggs and a large perch.

What else can I say?
